SHIH HUANG TI: Prince Cheng of the Ch'in
dynasty (221-206 B.C.) unified CHINA in 221
B.C. He was apparently a legalist rather than a
Confucianist, and throughout his life he
opposed Confucianist teachings. Upon
becoming emperor, with the name Huang-ti
(August Emperor), he built roads and canals,
created a unified system of measurements,
developed a single currency, simplified the
writing system, and ordered the construction
of the first sections of what is today known as
the GREAT WALL OF CHINA. Although the Shih
Huang Ti ("The First Emperor") dynasty only
ruled for some two decades, his fame spread
to the Roman Empire; the Western name of
CHINA is derived from the Ch'in dynasty. He is
also famous for having burned all classical
Chinese literature and for having executing
nearly all the country's scholars.
